Eight pieces of the American water can in one package. The small castings are fitted into racks on fenders, onto beds and at field posts in 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Water traveled with American units in a rectangular container of an outline similar to the fuel can, but with a markedly different neck and closure. Telling the two apart matters on a model, because the containers hung on the same racks side by side and a mix-up shows at first glance.
The package carries eight pieces, which makes it a supply for a whole setting rather than an accessory for one place. Spread them around the scene, therefore: some into the racks on a vehicle, some leaning against the wall of a post, one laid on its side.
The work begins with removing the flash. Cast resin forms a thin filmy rim in the parting plane of the mold, which is best cut away with a scalpel run along the edge rather than across it. Finish the remainder with a sanding plate, because coarse paper rounds the sharp edge of the container off and it then looks soft.
Fitting into a rack calls for a dry trial. Racks on kits tend to be narrower than reality allows, and a casting will not go into them. Take material off the back of the container until it drops in; the visible side with its pressings has to stay whole. Where a rack is photo-etched, bend the strap to the actual width of the casting instead.
Finally the paint. Water containers tended to have a different finish or white markings, so that they were not confused with fuel, and it is precisely that detail which gives the set its point. A unified dusting at the end will tie the containers to the vehicle into one whole.
The remaining pieces need not end up in a box. A container laid on its side by a wheel, leaning against a crate or half sunk into mud breaks up the regularity of a scene better than one more piece lined up in a rack.
