During the Second World War mobile cranes were part of the ordinary equipment of American support and repair units. Engines and gearboxes were lifted out of damaged vehicles with them, material was transshipped and temporary structures were built. They appeared in field workshops, in ports and on airfields, that is exactly in the setting that offers modelers a rewarding scene with plenty of activity and part-built equipment.
The set renders a mobile crane in 1:35 scale, that is the same size in which ordinary kits of military equipment are issued. The range of parts and the recommended order of the build are given in the manufacturer's instructions; follow them in setting the boom as well, because it is exactly its position that decides how the whole thing will look on a diorama and how much room it will take up.
Put the parts together dry first and only then glue them, and choose the glue according to the material of the parts. Cut any excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder back. Wash and degrease the whole thing before painting. Working machines tended to be painted simply and to get dirty quickly, so credibility is helped by a restrained base shade, a dark wash into every gap and worn edges where hands and tools rubbed against the machine every day. Pick out the cables, hooks and pulleys with a metallic shade and, in the places of contact, sand the paint back to a shine.
The model will be appreciated by builders of dioramas and display cases with American equipment who feel their scene lacks an element explaining what is going on in it. A crane gives sense to a vehicle with an open engine compartment and to a part-built assembly of components. Paints, glue and material for a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
