Five modern American ammunition boxes in 1:35 scale with a decal sheet. Material that never occurs in a scene as a single piece.

A sheet metal ammunition box is one of the few things on a battlefield where the number is part of the story. Supply is issued in whole lots, the empty containers are set aside and the full ones wait lined up by the weapon. While furniture or tools tend to come singly on a base, you recognize ammunition by the fact that several pieces lie side by side, usually squared up on edge.
The set carries five boxes and a decal sheet to go with them. That is more important with this kind of item than it seems: a box without printing is just a gray block, and it is the lettering about caliber, number of rounds and lot that turns it into a recognizable object. Five pieces is enough for them to be grouped into two clusters with one left aside, which looks more convincing than a regular grid.
Modern American boxes are finished in olive and sand tones, and the shade varies between lots, so feel free to reach for two close colors instead of one. Decals hold best on a smooth, slightly glossy base; flatten the finish once they are dry. Battered corners and scuffed lids are the rule with these containers, not the exception, because they are handled often and without ceremony.
Avoid setting them out evenly in a row. A smaller heap leaning against the side of a vehicle or against a wall looks more convincing, with one piece laid flat beside it and the last pushed a little further away, as though somebody had kicked it. If you are building a firing position, leave some of the containers open in the sense of empty and set down out of reach, because the empty ones always piled up somewhere other than the full ones. It is precisely that difference between supply and waste that makes a scene legible.
