A turned metal accessory from Master. It is not a vehicle model but a replacement barrel that goes into the turret or mount of a finished kit in 1:35 scale. By its name it is a weapon that appeared on a number of tanks and armored cars, so the part has uses across a collection of American vehicles.
The gun barrel is the most exposed part of a whole model. A plastic one is molded from two halves, so a seam runs along it that has to be sanded away, and in sanding the cylindrical shape is almost always flattened. A turned part is evenly circular along its whole length, exactly concentric, and its muzzle is genuinely drilled, not merely suggested by a dimple. Because the barrel does not deform by bending either, it keeps a horizontal attitude even after years in a display case.
The 37 mm M6 gun was the standard American tank weapon of the early 1940s. It was a quick-firing gun with a semi-automatic vertical breech block, mounted in the turrets of light tanks and armored cars. In its day it served well against lightly armored targets and for firing high-explosive ammunition, but as armor grew it was gradually replaced by guns of larger caliber.
The plastic barrel is cut off at the root, the area is leveled and a hole is drilled to match the shank. Dry-fitting matters, so that the barrel points exactly forward and does not sit at an angle; once the super glue has set, no correction is possible. The finish can go two ways: either degrease the metal, go over it with a primer for metal and paint it along with the rest of the vehicle, or use a blackening product and leave the barrel in a dark metal tone. The second option suits the muzzle in particular, where only traces of dust are then added.
This is an accessory for building the model, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
