The Volkswagen Type 87 in 1:35 scale is a plastic kit of the German off-road passenger car with a fully detailed interior from Rye Field Model.

A plastic kit in 1:35 scale from 2024. The Type 87 is the all-wheel-drive version of the people's car, used in wartime service as a command and liaison vehicle. The kit is listed as the version with a full interior, and according to the manufacturer the package includes a photo-etched fret and decals. The doors, the front luggage compartment and the engine cover can all be built open or closed.
The Type 87 comes from the design everyone knows today as the Beetle: an air-cooled flat four at the rear, a load-bearing platform floorpan and simple suspension with torsion bars. Unlike the civilian car it was given drive to both axles, raised ground clearance and off-road tires, so it got through where an ordinary passenger car did not. Only a limited number of these cars were built and they were used mainly by staffs.
Finish and paint the interior before you close up the body, as there will be no getting to it later. Fit the wheels only after the chassis has been painted, otherwise the tires are hard to mask. Bend the photo-etched parts over a metal ruler. The smooth body reveals every unfinished joint, so sand the surfaces carefully before painting and inspect them against the light. At the end, fine dust in the wheel arches and a dark wash in the door gaps work well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
