In the German army of the Second World War grenadier was the designation of a rank-and-file infantryman; from 1942 the infantry regiments carried the name grenadier regiments. The Waffen-SS was the armed branch of the SS, committed in the field alongside army units. In a diorama the infantry provides the scale that a vehicle itself never gives: only beside a figure is it clear how tall the hull of a tank is or how small the hatch was that the crew squeezed through.
One figure of an infantryman in 1:35 scale, that is a figure roughly five centimeters tall. The figure is supplied as a kit to assemble and paint. The number of parts, the pose and a list of the weapons and equipment are given by the box and the manufacturer's instructions; before buying, therefore, it pays to look through the illustration to see whether the pose suits the scene you are building.
First try the parts dry and only then glue them; choose the glue according to the material, and on parts that are not of polystyrene cyanoacrylate glue holds. Cut away surplus material with a sharp blade a short distance from the part and sand the remainder, and fill the seams at the shoulders and the waist. Before painting, wash the figure, degrease it and coat it with a primer. Build the face and the hands up in layers: a base tone, a thinned darker glaze into the shadows and a lighter tone on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones. A thinned darker glaze into the folds and drybrushing on the edges will bring the uniform to life.
For modelers who build German vehicles of the Second World War and want to get a human figure to go with them, and for collectors of figures as an object in its own right on a base. Painting a figure is a different discipline from painting a vehicle, and a single figure is a good way to try it. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
