Military scenes also take in people who are not holding a weapon. This resin figure represents a front-line correspondent, a figure who moved between units with the permission of headquarters and whose work now runs through every picture book about the war. The brand Royal Model has executed it in the usual collector scale, that is at roughly five centimeters in height.
Reporters with fighting armies went about mostly in uniform, were subject to military censorship and had escorts assigned to them. Their pictures and texts were produced under pressure and were information and propaganda at once. The presence of such a figure shifts a scene at once from combat action to an account of how the war was recorded.
The figure works best where it has somebody to observe: beside a crew by a vehicle, among prisoners or by wrecked hardware. Allow it some distance from the other figures so that it reads as an outside observer. In color, set it apart with a less saturated tone of clothing than the soldiers around it; that does the more civilian impression good.
Choose a restrained base. With a narrative figure a richly decorated plinth draws attention away from the expression of the face, and it is exactly that which carries the whole message of the scene.
