1:35 Wharf section: a section of harbor quay as the basis of a naval scene in 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A harbor edge is the place where everything meets: ship cargo, trucks, cranes, patrols, civilians and soldiers waiting to embark. That is exactly why jetties and quays are among the most rewarding subjects, as on a few dozen centimeters a story can be told for which open country would need ten times the area. A stone or concrete edge with timber facing, mooring bollards and worn edges is legible without a single caption.
A landing or a loading operation suggests itself, as does the evacuation of wounded, a submarine base or a postwar scene with civilian equipment. It suits figures in naval uniforms just as well as ground vehicles, because a harbor is a setting where the two overlap. A longer stretch can also be put together from several pieces in a row to create an elongated composition along a whole shelf.
The water surface is done at the very end, once everything else is finished and fixed in place. On the edge at the water leave a dark band of algae and limescale, and leave the top bleached and dusty instead. The timber parts of the facing are most worn in the places where the ships rubbed against them.
Set the quay on a hard board, so that the edge stays straight. Even slight warping of the base is immediately visible on a long straight line and cannot be corrected later. Leave the space under the edge free for pouring the water surface and seal the joint between the quay and the board carefully, otherwise the compound will run underneath. Only then does it make sense to start painting the stone.
