Replacement wheels for the light Sd.Kfz. 250 carrier

Cast wheels for a model of the German light half-track carrier Sd.Kfz. 250 in 1:35 scale. Resin holds a truer tread pattern and shape of the rim than can be obtained from a split plastic mold, and the distracting parting line down the middle of the tire disappears with it.

The light half-track carrier

The Sd.Kfz. 250 was created on the chassis of the Demag artillery tractor and differed from its larger sibling in its shorter hull and smaller crew. It was used as a reconnaissance vehicle, a signals station and a weapons carrier and served on every front from 1940. Steering was done by the front axle on pneumatic tires, while the tracks at the rear provided the drive. The German army took this combination further than anyone else and it became a recognition mark of its motorized units.

The swap step by step

First free the castings of the remains of mold release agent and cut the casting gate off so that the cut falls on the seating surface of the rim, not on the outline of the tire. Try the hub dry on the pin in the model and widen it with a drill if need be. Glue it with cyanoacrylate and watch that both wheels stand at the same angle. Before painting comes a filler primer, then a dark undercoat and finally dust applied with pigments from the ground upward.
