About product

Douglas TBD Devastator in 1:350 scale (Trumpeter)

A set of injection-molded plastic models of a carrier aircraft in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. It belongs to that maker's extensive line of small aircraft, which exists for a single purpose: to fill the flight deck, the hangar or the elevators of an aircraft carrier model in 1:350 scale with machines of the matching period. By the nature of the scale the parts are simple and tiny, and the finished aircraft fits on a fingernail. The build is therefore short, but it calls for a steady hand, a sharp blade and tweezers.

The real subject

The Douglas TBD Devastator was a carrier-based torpedo bomber of the US Navy brought into service in the second half of the 1930s. It was an all-metal low-wing machine with folding wings, a glazed canopy for a crew of three and fixed landing gear partly recessed into the wing. At the time it entered service it was among the modern carrier machines, but by the beginning of the 1940s it was falling behind in performance and was withdrawn from front-line units. For the modeler it is interesting above all for the shape of its wing and for the characteristic long canopy, which set the machine apart from later carrier types.

Building and painting tips

Cut the small parts from the sprue with a sharp scalpel on a cutting mat, and never break them off — in this scale they deform easily. Sand the sprue stubs down with a fine file. Use a thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush, so that it does not run over the edges. It is easiest to paint them while still on the sprue: spray the base shade, separate the parts and touch up only the cuts. Suggest the cockpit with a thin line of dark paint, or with a drop of gloss varnish for the impression of glazing. If you are placing the aircraft on the deck, think their arrangement and orientation through in advance — on ship models a slightly irregular layout looks natural, not a perfect row.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ships in 1:350 scale who want to populate the flight deck
  • Modelers focused on naval aviation of the 1930s and 1940s
  • Those who want to try working with very small plastic parts
  • Completing dioramas on naval themes in a small scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Sets in this line are by their nature conceived as a multi-piece way of completing a deck arrangement.

Above all for populating the flight deck, the hangar or the elevators of an aircraft carrier model in 1:350 scale. An aircraft built on its own is very tiny, given the scale.

In the number of parts yes, in size rather not. The parts are miniature, so a sharp scalpel, tweezers and a thin cement applied with a fine brush come in handy.
