An injection-molded plastic kit of the American heavy cruiser USS San Francisco from Trumpeter in 1:350 scale, this time in her later 1944 fit. Compared with the 1942 version the kit reflects the changes of her wartime refit: strengthened anti-aircraft armament, added radars and different period camouflage. The hull is split for both full hull and waterline. The box holds the superstructures, the turrets, the anti-aircraft guns, the boats and a stand.
USS San Francisco was a heavy cruiser of the New Orleans class and one of the most decorated American warships. After heavy fighting off Guadalcanal in 1942 the ship went through further service in the Pacific and a gradual refit. By 1944 modern radars and a denser light anti-aircraft battery had been added, which matched the development of the naval war and the growing air threat. The 1944 fit therefore shows the ship in her later, fully equipped form.
Before gluing the hull, choose full hull or waterline. Glue the small anti-aircraft guns and the radar aerials with liquid cement for plastic and sand the joints carefully. The busy superstructures of 1944 positively invite the addition of photo-etched railings, ladders and radars, which are not included in the package. For 1944 choose a period-appropriate American camouflage scheme, ideally with an airbrush. Subtle accenting of the panels and discreet patina will bring out the rich superstructure. Apply the decals over a gloss coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
