The Reskit resin set in 1:48 scale contains two AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles in the A and D versions. It is not an airplane model but a set of external stores to be fitted to a finished model. The castings have a smooth cylindrical body, crisply rendered surfaces and cleanly cast details, so they are useful even where the basic kit has the weapons only in rough form or does not have them at all.
The Harpoon is an anti-ship guided missile with a subsonic cruise mode that approaches the target area low over the water. Its air-launched form was among the most widespread armament of its kind and was carried by a whole range of naval and patrol machines, among them the P-3 Orion, the S-3 Viking, the A-6 Intruder, the A-7E Corsair II, the F/A-18 and the B-52H. The A and D versions differ mainly in the equipment for guidance and mission planning; outwardly they are close to one another, which makes it easier for the modeler to choose according to the particular carrier and period.
First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water because of the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surface with sandpaper; go carefully on thin surfaces, because resin is brittle. They are bonded with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); on heavier stores a small metal pin drilled into the pylon helps. Apply a filler primer before painting. Light weapon shades are sprayed in thin coats so that the edges are not lost, and color bands are cleaner masked than painted with a brush. Keep the weathering restrained, as the armament tended to be well maintained.
This is an add-on set, not an airplane model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
