This is NOT an aircraft kit but a detail accessory from 3D printing: a pair of engine cowlings for the B-25 Mitchell kit in 1:48 scale from the firm HK Model — you have to have the model. Two pieces mean a set for both engines. The reason cowlings get replaced is simple: for technological reasons injection-molded plastic has thick walls and coarse edges on this part, so the leading edge of the cowling and the exhaust outlets look oversized in scale. The printed cowling has a thin wall and faithfully rendered exhaust outlets; according to the manufacturer it is fitted with no modification of the plastic parts. The set does not contain the engines themselves — the manufacturer offers those as a separate accessory.
The North American B-25 Mitchell was an American twin-engine medium bomber, one of the most widespread machines of its category; it flew on practically every battlefield of the Second World War. It went down in history above all through the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942, when a group of B-25s took off from the deck of an aircraft carrier — an unheard-of feat for a twin-engine bomber at the time, and one with an enormous psychological impact. It was powered by Wright R-2600 radial engines hidden under precisely these cowlings, whose shape and the design of whose outlets differed between the individual versions of the Mitchell. Replacing the cowling is therefore not only a question of detail but of correct shape as well.
Printed resin does not get along with cement for plastic — polystyrene cement does not work here, so make the joints with super glue or with epoxy, which gives you time to seat the cowling precisely. Cut the supports off with a saw as close to the part as possible and level the remains off — do not try to snap them, as the thin wall of the cowling is sensitive. Clean the sanded spot up only wet: resin dust is harmful to health and must not be inhaled. Before painting, wash the cowling in lukewarm water with a detergent so that residues of print resin and of mold release agent disappear — otherwise the paint will not hold. Then a primer, aluminum or camouflage shades according to the machine and finally the exhaust outlets smoked up with pigments or thinned oil paint.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a kit. The model, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package. The manufacturer does not state in any detail which particular version (subversion) of the Mitchell the shape of the cowlings is intended for — before buying, please compare it with the version you are building.
