About product

C-47A Skytrain in 1:48 scale (Trumpeter)

A sizable injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary transport and paratroop aircraft Douglas C-47A Skytrain in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. With a span of about 60 cm it is a large and striking model. The package contains gray plastic parts, transparent parts for the glazing and a decal sheet; the particular contents depend on the current release. The model offers a broken-down interior and landing gear, so the typical shape of the workhorse of Allied aviation comes into its own.

The real subject

The C-47 Skytrain is the military version of the famous airliner Douglas DC-3. This twin-engine aircraft became the backbone of Allied air transport in the Second World War: it carried cargo and troops, dropped paratroopers and towed cargo gliders. It played an irreplaceable role on the eve of the Normandy landings (D-Day), when thousands of paratroopers jumped from its hold. In British service it carried the name Dakota. Thanks to their reliability and toughness some machines went on flying long after the war in civilian use and with armed forces all over the world.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the interior and the cockpit before you close the fuselage; on a transport aircraft with a glazed cockpit and windows the view inside is noticeable. The extensive glazing and the row of windows are worth masking. Assemble and shade both engines and the propellers separately, then fit them into the nacelles. On a large model, make sure the wing is firmly glued to the fuselage. A silver (natural metal) or olive drab finish is common, and prominent black and white invasion stripes belong on the paratroop machines. An airbrush is ideal for an even coat, and the panel lines come alive with a fine wash.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Allied aviation of the Second World War
  • anyone interested in D-Day, airborne operations and air transport
  • more experienced modelers with a taste for large twin-engine aircraft
  • builders looking for a striking model for a display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
