MASTER 1:48 Curtiss P-40 L, N (early) - barrels, gunsight and pitot tube

This product is not an aircraft kit but a detail accessory from MASTER. The set contains four turned metal barrels for Browning .50 caliber machine guns including the blast tubes and an adapter for seating them in the wing, plus a gunsight and a pitot tube. It is meant for Curtiss P-40 kits in the L and N (early) versions in 1:48 scale from Eduard.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40 was one of the most widespread Allied fighters of the first half of the war and served on most fronts. On the P-40L and the early P-40N versions the armament was cut from six .50 caliber machine guns to four to reduce weight and improve performance - which is exactly why this set contains four barrels and matches these particular aircraft rather than the full six-gun armament of the earlier versions.

Use and fitting

• Cut the plastic barrels off the kit, drill a hole in the remaining part and fit the metal barrel with its adapter.
• Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate) - cement for plastic does not hold on metal.
• Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with primer, otherwise the paint flakes off.
• Fit the gunsight and the pitot tube right at the end, after painting and the decals - they are easily damaged.
• The muzzles of the metal barrels are drilled, so there is nothing more to drill out.
