Decals in 1:48 scale for seven P-40K Warhawk machines from China through New Guinea to the Aleutians, including the aircraft of the commander of a famous fighter group.
Responsibility details are not available.
The K was the version of the Warhawk that received a more powerful Allison engine and, because of the changed torque, a lengthened rear fuselage on the later production blocks. The sheet offers seven machines and spreads them across the whole Pacific theater. The best known is the aircraft of the commander of the fighter group that in China took over the legacy of the volunteer Flying Tigers and kept the shark mouths on its cowlings.
Two aircraft come from a fighter squadron operating over New Guinea, where the Warhawks served as the workhorse in the fight against Japanese fighters and in attacks on ground targets. Another pair fought in the north, at Amchitka in the Aleutian chain, that is in conditions the American equipment built for the tropics was not ready for: fog, wind and damp took the gloss off the paintwork and left stains behind. One machine is shown in the colors of a unit operating from an escort carrier.
The printing is rich and fine enough for the small stencils to stay legible. The decals are laid down the classic way: over a gloss surface, with a decal softener and with enough water under the film so that they can be moved into their final position. Once they are dry and sealed with varnish the carrier film stops showing and the markings look painted on. The package consists of the sheet itself together with background information on each of the machines; the model and the paints are obtained separately by the modeler.
