A set of masks for the camouflage of the F-14 Tomcat fighter flown by the Iranian Air Force, 1:48 scale. The films mark out the desert fields on the fuselage, the swing wing and the pair of tail surfaces.
Responsibility details are not available.
Iran is the only foreign user of this heavy carrier fighter, and after 1979 it was left entirely alone with its fleet, without access to spare parts or to training from the manufacturer. That it kept the machines airworthy for decades is one of the more remarkable chapters in the history of military aviation. It was precisely that isolation that led the aircraft there to wear finishes you will never see on American naval machines.
In place of naval gray you meet a desert combination here: light sand, brown and a green tone on the upper surfaces, completed by light gray or pale blue-gray below. On some machines a variant with two shades of brown also appears. Alongside the four basic colors, have a dark color ready for the engine covers, which differ from the surrounding finish because of heat stress.
The space between the two vertical surfaces and above the flat center of the fuselage is the hardest place on the whole model to reach on this aircraft. We recommend putting the films in here first, while nothing is in the way, and only then working outward. Apply the paint in this place from a greater distance and lightly, because the gun cannot get in here perpendicular and there is a risk of the coat building up in the corner.
