The F-35B Lightning II is capable of a short takeoff and a vertical landing, but it spends most of its time with the rear exhaust nozzle in the horizontal position. That is how it looks in ordinary flight and that is how it stands on a parking area as well. The nozzle then points backward in the axis of the fuselage and only a narrow gap remains between the tail and it, so that by appearance the aircraft is indistinguishable from a conventional fighter. It is precisely this position that is the most common on a model, because a standing or a flying aircraft is built substantially more often than an aircraft in the middle of its takeoff run.
A replacement exhaust nozzle modeled in the horizontal position, that is in the form for flight and for a standing aircraft. The view into the nozzle from behind is among the places where the difference between a simplified kit part and a separately produced replacement shows up fastest on a model.
Cut off the excess material with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder flat, so that the nozzle joins the tail without a step. Wash and degrease the part before painting and choose the glue to match the material of the part. It pays to paint the nozzle separately and fit it only at the end: inside, a dark base and a fine lightening of the edges work well, and outside a metallic shade with slight sooting. The horizontal position lets the viewer look into the nozzle, so do not underrate the interior.
For modelers who are building the F-35B in flight or on the apron and want the rear end of the aircraft sharper than the kit part allows. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
