Replacement engine exhaust nozzles for the early Phantoms in 1:48. A resin casting delivers the petals that injection-molded plastic manages only in simplified form.
Responsibility details are not available.
The second-generation Phantom was powered by two General Electric J79 engines and their variable nozzles were made up of a row of thin petals that opened and closed according to the flight regime. The early versions marked with the letters B, C, D and N shared the shape of the tail, so one set of nozzles covers several machines of the US armed forces and of the Navy from the 1960s and 1970s.
On an aircraft model the tail is the most frequently examined place after the pilot's compartment, and injection-molded plastic runs into its limits here: the wall of the nozzle comes out thick, the petals merge and the inside stays empty. A resin casting allows a thin wall and the depth in which the eye gets lost, so the tail stops looking like a blind hole. The inner surfaces can also be convincingly heat-tinted with shades of burnt steel and bluish casts in the hottest places.
The nozzles are fitted at the very end, after the fuselage has been painted, so that the paint on the tail goes on without masking. Before gluing, the seating ring is set into the opening in the fuselage in a dry test and any overhang is carefully sanded. Dust from sanded resin belongs under extraction or under water, not in your lungs.
A decision worth thinking about in advance concerns the state of the petals. On the apron with the engines shut down the petals open out to their widest diameter, whereas at full thrust they draw in to a narrow throat. The state you choose changes the silhouette of the tail so much that a model with the other choice photographs quite differently, and once it is glued it can no longer be changed.
