This is not an aircraft model but a resin accessory set in 1:48 scale intended for an F-4 Phantom II kit. The abbreviation FOD denotes damage to an engine by an ingested foreign object, and it is exactly against that that covers are fitted to the air intakes of a parked machine. On a model they play the same role visually: they close off the intakes and give the aircraft the typical look of a machine parked on the flight line.
The Phantom has two side intakes with a distinctive leading edge shape, and their interiors are among the places hardest to finish on a model — the plastic ducts are usually short and the seam inside shows. Fitted covers elegantly get around the problem and at the same time add a detail to the model that is practically never missing on the flight line. The set is therefore rewarding in dioramas with ground crew, in a scene on the edge of a flight deck and for simply displaying a machine without a crew.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent — otherwise any mold release agent left on them will keep the paint from adhering. Cut off the casting blocks with a saw or a snap-off knife, never break them off; sand wet and with respiratory protection. They are bonded with super glue, because cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Apply a thin primer before painting and only then the covering shade. Intake covers are in practice conspicuously colorful so that nobody can overlook them, so it suits them to work with a clean, deep color and a gentle highlight on the edges.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
