A marking sheet for four torpedo-carrying Grummans TBF-1C: a pair from composite squadron VC-63 aboard the escort carrier Natoma Bay and a pair from VT-2 off the deck of the Hornet.
Responsibility details are not available.
The TBF Avenger entered service in the spring of 1942 as a direct replacement for its hopelessly obsolete predecessor and became the heaviest carrier-based torpedo machine the US Navy operated during the Second World War. The TBF-1C sub-version added a pair of 20 mm cannon in the wings and increased the fuel capacity, so the machine could manage patrols lasting several hours over the open ocean and still carry a torpedo or a bomb load in its enclosed bay.
Two of the Avengers on this sheet belonged to composite squadron VC-63, which in February 1944 operated from the escort carrier Natoma Bay and carried the white numbers fifteen and nineteen on the fuselage. The remaining pair flew with VT-2 off the deck of the fleet carrier Hornet in June 1944, that is in the weeks of the fighting for the Marianas. For one of them, alongside the white ninety-seven, the serial number is documented as well, so the particular machine can be traced.
Level the surface out with gloss varnish first. A matte surface under the film creates a silvery veil that no amount of polishing will put right. The marking is released from the paper in lukewarm water, and a softener will help settle it by drawing the film into the panel lines and the rows of rivets. Once dry comes a sealing coat, and only then any dusting from exhaust gases.
The package holds only the printed sheet in 1:48 scale; have the assembled and painted model ready in advance.
