Nine markings for the vertical-landing AV-8B Harrier II of the Marine Corps, 1:48 scale. The second part of a series devoted to machines with vectoring nozzles.
Responsibility details are not available.
The machine with vectoring nozzles stayed in active service with the American expeditionary units until the middle of the 2020s, and the sheet captures that last chapter exceptionally thoroughly. It takes in aircraft from the decks of amphibious assault ships and from a land base on the east coast and runs from 2012 to 2025, the period when the gray low-visibility finishes settled and the only colorful element left was the marking of the commanders' machines.
The selection holds machines of the squadrons numbered 223, 211 and 231, of a training unit and of a test establishment. Codes appear from the decks of the amphibious assault ships Wasp, Kearsarge, Makin Island and Bataan, and a number of the aircraft are captured at a time when they worked as part of composite groups with helicopter squadrons.
Nine options mean that one purchase covers several models. The gray camouflages differ in shade and in the degree of weathering, so even two machines painted the same look different once finished. The low-visibility markings are printed in muted tones so that they do not shout on the surface.
Even the surface out and coat it with a gloss layer before the artwork goes on; on matte grays the film would otherwise give itself away. Get a Harrier model in 1:48 scale separately, as this item deals with the markings and their credibility.
On aircraft from late service it is worth suggesting the faded areas around the nozzles and the traces of taxiing on the deck. It is exactly these small things that turn a finished model into something a visitor stops in front of.
