Quinta Studio 1:48: color 3D interior for the LaGG-3 series 66

A set of 3D printed color interior decals for a model of the LaGG-3 series 66 in 1:48 scale, cut for the kit from Zvezda. It is neither a model nor a photo-etched set: these are raised, already finished color details on a decal backing paper, which slide onto the parts from the box after a short soak.

How it works

The details are printed in color from the outset and with real depth: an instrument panel with raised bezels around the dials and legible faces, side consoles with levers and switches, a seat with its harness and buckles. That takes away the most demanding part of the cockpit, the laborious brush painting of small dials and the varnishing of recesses. Nothing has to be bent, as it does with photo-etched parts: the pieces are pliable, follow the shape of the surface underneath and carry their own color and shading. The LaGG-3 cockpit is clearly visible through the glazing, so the difference against bare plastic shows at first sight.

Use

• Spray the kit part the detail is going onto with a dark base first and coat it with a gloss varnish (Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22), on which the decal holds.
• Cut the piece out of the sheet and leave it for about fifteen seconds in lukewarm water; it has no adhesive layer of its own, and only the glue of the backing paper releases in the water.
• Slide it off the paper into place, guide it with tweezers and press it down with a soft tool from the center toward the edges, so that the detail settles into the shape.
• Do not overpress the raised elements: the dials and levers are meant to carry depth, not to be squashed flat; on busy areas a drop of cyanoacrylate glue helps.
• Do not use a decal softener or a setting solution, as their chemistry attacks the printed resin; the cockpit can be accented at the end with a dry brush or a wash.

Who the set is for

For modelers building the LaGG-3 series 66 in 1:48 scale who want a realistic, colorful and legible cockpit without painting small details with a brush. Because the set calls for no bending and no soldering, it is within reach of less experienced modelers who would not yet take on photo-etched parts.
