An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 fighter in 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss. The model is conceived as easy to build: it has finely engraved panel lines, a clear breakdown of the parts and a prepared cockpit. Decals for two color schemes are included in the box.
The Bf 109E, nicknamed Emil, was the principal German fighter in the early years of the Second World War, including the Battle of Britain. It was powered by the inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 with fuel injection, thanks to which it did not cut out under negative g the way carburetor engines did. The E-3 version carried two MG 17 machine guns above the engine and one MG FF cannon in each wing. The Emil was notable for the angular shapes of its canopy and for the struts bracing its tailplane.
The model suits less experienced builders as well, but care is rewarded with a handsome result. Pick out the cockpit and the instrument panel with a dry brush and a wash. Glue the cockpit glazing in place and mask it before painting. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement, even out the surface with primer and apply the paint with an airbrush. Early Emils typically wore upper camouflage in German aviation greens with a light blue underside; the hard-edged transitions on the fuselage and the mottled pattern on the sides are characteristic. Complete the weathering with washes and fine exhaust staining.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
