A turned metal ring for the leading edge of the air intake for the MiG-21bis in 1:48 scale. It is intended for Eduard kits and replaces the corresponding part of the plastic component of the circular nose intake with its center cone. The MiG-21bis is a late version of this fighter, carried in Western designation under the reporting names Fishbed-L and Fishbed-N.
The leading edge of the air intake is very thin and sharp on the real aircraft. Injection-molded plastic cannot have it that thin, and the edge therefore looks blunt on a finished model. Turned metal holds a sharp profile and an accurate circular shape and stands up to sanding and painting without being lost. The nose air intake is the first thing anyone looks at on this aircraft, so the difference is visible without measuring.
Cut off the corresponding part of the plastic component, level the mating face with a file and try the ring dry first. It is glued with cyanoacrylate or with two-part epoxy. Degrease the metal before gluing and before painting, otherwise neither the joint nor the paint will hold; on metal, use a base intended for metal surfaces. Level the transition between metal and plastic with filler as needed, but leave the edge itself alone.
For modelers who are building the MiG-21bis and want to remove the most conspicuous weakness of the plastic part without laborious rework. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
