This is not an airplane model but a detailed powerplant for a kit. The set from the Czech firm Eduard (Obrnice near Most) is made by 3D printing and brings a complete Allison V-12 engine with its accessories, together with the matching cowlings. It is made for a model built with the engine cowlings open – that is, an aircraft captured under maintenance on the airfield. The exposed, faithfully detailed engine turns a model into a striking diorama scene. The set belongs to the Curtiss P-40K plastic kit by Eduard in 1:48 scale, which you have to own.
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American fighter and ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War with its painted shark mouth and its service with the Flying Tigers. It was powered by a liquid-cooled Allison V12 engine – it is the shape of that engine that gives the P-40 its characteristically long nose. The K version is a later form. An exposed engine is one of the most rewarding ways to bring a model to life.
Cut the parts carefully from the print supports, clean them up and wash them. They are bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate). The engine comes into its own with careful painting: metallic shades, a wash in the recesses and gentle highlighting of the lines and the accessories. Dry-fit the run of the cowlings and the fuselage. Protect your airways while sanding.
This is a detailed 3D-printed resin accessory, not a standalone model. It requires the matching P-40K kit by Eduard. Glue and paints are not included in the package.
