About product

The most numerous French aircraft of May 1940

The Potez 63-11 was the observation and reconnaissance version of the family of twin-engine Potez aircraft, and at the time of the German attack it was the most widespread type in the French Air Force of all. The glazed nose gave the observer an exceptional view, but at the same time did nothing to protect the machine against fighters. After the armistice the aircraft went to a whole range of further users and a number of them flew on for several more years.

The fate of one airframe in two sets of colors

The most interesting pair on the sheet is the machine with the serial number 501 of the group GR I/36 from July 1940 and, immediately after it, the same aircraft in the colors of the Spanish Air Force at the Son San Juan base. The modeler can thus choose which chapter of its life to capture it in. They are joined by a machine of the training unit at Lyon from March 1940 and an aircraft with the number six, which in 1943 served with the Regia Aeronautica in Piedmont.

Masking stencils in the package

Masks for the glazing are included with the sheet, made for it by Montex. On a type with such a heavily divided cockpit that saves hours of sticking and cutting strips. The masks go onto clean plastic before spraying, the decals only onto a finished gloss coat.

The item is intended for an assembled model in 1:48 scale.

What became of the aircraft afterward

After June 1940 a large part of the surviving Potez aircraft stayed in service and their paths diverged into several air forces at once. That is exactly why a display can be put together from a single type in which machines with Spanish and Italian markings stand side by side, without any of them looking like a curiosity.

FAQ

Yes, masking stencils for the canopy are included, supplied for this sheet by Montex.

It is the same airframe with the serial number 501, first in French colors and then after it was seized by the Spanish Air Force.

A span from March 1940 to 1943, that is from French service through Spanish to Italian use.

First the masks on bare plastic before painting, and the decals only onto a cured gloss coat once the camouflage is finished.
