This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. The set from Special Mask contains pre-cut masks matching the shape of the glazing of a model of the French Super Mystere SMB-2 fighter in 1:48 scale. The modeler applies them to the clear parts and sprays the frames together with the rest of the airframe, so the finished cockpit reads as one whole.
The cockpit is the place everyone looks at when they pick a model up. An uneven frame edge or a rippling strip of tape gives away haste no matter how cleanly the camouflage is done. A die-cut mask holds the exact width of the frame along its whole length and follows the curvature of the canopy as well, where straight tape breaks and forms creases. No smaller advantage is that you never have to bring a scalpel close to the glass.
The Super Mystere was a French single-engine fighter of the late 1950s, developed from the earlier Mystere series. It was the first series-built Western European combat aircraft able to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. It had a swept wing, cannon armament in the nose, and besides the French Air Force it served with other users, where it remained in active service for years after production ended.
Wash and degrease the clear part first; fingerprints under the mask stay there forever. Seat the mask dry, check that it lines up with the frame and only then press it down with a soft stick. Spray the interior color of the frames first, so that bare plastic does not show when seen from inside, then the primer and finally the exterior shades. Before lifting the mask, run the back of a scalpel blade along the edge of the frame without pressure; that breaks the dried film of paint and the edge does not tear away.
