1:48 SUU-16A, the pod with an open gun bay from Reskit. A striking 3D printed store revealing the weapon inside, one piece for the wing pylon of the Phantom II.
Responsibility details are not available.
The variant for modelers who want to show the viewer what is hidden inside a store. This printed set from Reskit captures the pod with an open bay that reveals the rotary weapon inside, exactly the view that met the armorers while preparing ammunition. In the box there is one piece intended for mounting under the wing; the aircraft itself is not included, as this is an accessory for a build in progress.
The six-barrel Vulcan inside the SUU-16/A pod could pour out thousands of rounds a minute and was driven by a swing-out ram air turbine using the oncoming airflow. The store gave the early Phantoms, which had no gun armament, the ability to fight at short range, where the missiles of the generation of the day failed. An open bay belonged to the everyday sight of maintenance at Vietnamese bases.
The exposed interior deserves careful painting of the metal shades and a dark wash that will bring out the mechanism of the weapon. When removing the print supports, work from the thinnest elements and always lead the edge of the knife away from the detail. Fit the store at the end of the build, ideally on a diorama with armorers; an open bay calls for a scene by itself.
