About product

Thunderbolt Mk.II Royal Air Force, Advanced Kit (1:48, MiniArt)

This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the American P-47 Thunderbolt fighter in the Mk.II version in British colors, 1:48 scale, from MiniArt. The Advanced Kit configuration brings rich detail including photo-etched parts and decals for three schemes. The package is built on well-molded plastic with a fine engraved texture.

The real subject

The Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and most rugged single-engined fighters of the Second World War. Its massive turbocharged radial engine gave it excellent performance at altitude and a toughness that made it a favorite ground-attack machine. The RAF operated Thunderbolts under the designation Mk.II above all in Southeast Asia, where they served to support ground units over Burma.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with thin cement for plastic and fix the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Finish the richly detailed cockpit before you close up the fuselage. Mask the glazing and paint it last. Lay down a primer; machines in Southeast Asia often carried camouflage in brown-green tones with light undersides. A fine wash will bring out the panels, and pigments and washes will add the dust and mud of ground-attack machines.

Who the model is for

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

  • For admirers of Second World War fighters.
  • For fans of the RAF and of the war in Southeast Asia.
  • For more experienced modelers who will appreciate the rich detail of the Advanced Kit.
  • For builders working in the popular 1:48 scale.
