A resin accessory for the model of the Westland Wessex HAS.3 helicopter from Italeri in 1:48 scale. It replaces the plastic exhaust outlets, which in kits tend to be cast solid or with only a shallow dimple. A resin casting allows the opening to be genuinely open, so that one looks into shadow rather than at flat plastic, and it is precisely this difference that is seen at once in a photograph of a model.
The Wessex is the British turbine version of an originally American design. The designation HAS.3 belongs to the single-engined anti-submarine variant of the Fleet Air Arm, easily recognized by its dorsal radome. The hot gases from the turbine left the machine through outlets in the forward part of the fuselage, around which prominent traces of soot and heat discoloration of the skin formed on real helicopters, a rewarding opportunity for weathering.
Wash the resin castings first in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent, beneath which paint does not hold, disappears. Paint the inside of the outlet before you fit the part: the darkest shade deep inside, gradually lighter toward the mouth, so that the opening looks deep. Heat discoloration of metal is best built up from thin coats; a faint pass of brown and violet over a metal base is enough, as exaggerated rainbow effects look unnatural. Deal with the soot on the skin behind the outlet with a pigment or very thinned paint applied in the direction of the airflow, not as one dark blotch. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and a cyanoacrylate gel gives you time to line the angle of the outlet up.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
