An injection-molded plastic kit of a British aircraft carrier in 1:600 scale. Airfix lists ships in this scale as a coherent range, thanks to which various types can be built at a mutually comparable size and displayed side by side. The small scale means a reasonable length of the finished model even for an ordinary shelf and at the same time a make-up of parts that does not overwhelm. Whether the hull is split for both a full version and a waterline one, and what exactly the package contains, should be checked in the instructions.
HMS Victorious was a British aircraft carrier of the Illustrious class, that is a type with an armored flight deck, brought into service at the beginning of the 1940s. In the 1950s she went through an exceptionally extensive rebuild in which she received an angled flight deck, a new island superstructure and modern radar equipment; afterwards she looked practically like a different ship. Which of these states the model captures can be told from the shape of the deck and the superstructure on the box and in the instructions.
In 1:600 scale the cleanliness of the surface decides more than the number of parts. Fill and sand the joints of the hull halves and the transition of the deck carefully, because in a small scale every scratch looks like a crack. Paint the flight deck separately from the sides of the hull and mask it with tape with a crisp edge; the railings, cranes and masts will take replacement with thin wire or a photo-etched accessory if you want to add fineness. Keep the weathering restrained: a fine wash in the recesses, a hint of streaking below the hawse holes and a matte overcoat are enough. The model stands out well on a simple base or on a water surface imitated with epoxy or acrylic gel.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
