A universal etched brass set of handrails and ladders in 1:700 scale from the Master Tools range by Trumpeter. It is not a model or a ship kit but an accessory set of details with which you replace the coarse plastic handrails and ladders on a warship model with fine metal parts. In the small 1:700 scale injection-molded plastic cannot render thin handrails faithfully, so it is the etched metal that takes care of a realistic look. The set is universal — the parts can be shortened and adapted to practically any ship.

Use and fitting

• Cut the parts out with a sharp blade or photo-etch scissors on a hard surface so that they do not bend.
• Bend the handrails in a photo-etch bending tool or along an accurate edge, so that the uprights and corners come out straight.
• Bond them with super glue (cyanoacrylate); the smallest amount is enough on fine joints.
• Before painting, apply a primer for etched metal and only then the final shade.
• Shorten the universal lengths to suit the particular deck and superstructure.
