About product

Eduard 1:700 Royal Navy signal flags STEEL: photo-etched signal flags

An add-on photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard intended for models of warships in 1:700 scale. The STEEL range means etching from steel with color printing: the material is springier and thinner than soft brass etching, holds its shape and at the same time lets the flags be given a natural ripple. The parts are printed, so they do not have to be painted. The set is purely an accessory; neither a ship model nor masts are in the package.

What the set is for

On real ships, signal flags were hoisted on masts and rigging and carried messages between vessels in a formation. On a model they are a small but conspicuous element: colorful flags break up a uniform gray silhouette and instantly give the model scale and life. In 1:700 scale flags made of any other material can hardly be made convincingly thin, which is why color etching is the cleanest route.

Usage tips

Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface rather than with nippers, as the edge of the printing can otherwise be damaged. Give a flag a slight ripple by drawing it over a rounded tool or folding it gently with tweezers; steel etching will hold the shape. It is glued with thin cyanoacrylate applied on a pin, and a slow-setting variant is an advantage, so that you have time to line the flag up. The rigging is best made of fine thread, and the flags should be fitted onto it only once it is dry. Do not spray the printed surfaces over with a flat clear coat across the board, as they would lose their saturation.

Who the set is for

  • builders of warships and escort vessels in 1:700 scale
  • modelers who want to complete a model with color detail without having to paint
  • anyone interested in dioramas and scenes with a group of ships
  • more advanced modelers used to working with photo-etched parts and tweezers

The set is supplied as a photo-etched fret. Glue, the ship model and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The parts of the STEEL range are printed in color at the factory, so you only cut them out, ripple them and glue them on.

With thin cyanoacrylate applied on a pin or a piece of wire. Cement for plastic will not hold on steel etching.

It is not. This is an add-on photo-etched fret and nothing else, intended to finish a model you already have.

Steel etching is springier and holds a shaped ripple better, so a flag on a mast looks natural and does not fall back flat.
