HäT 1:72 Carthaginian army, 67 figures

A set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale from the brand HäT. The package is put together as a whole army: it contains sixty-seven figures, of which fifty-four are on foot, seven are riders and two are elephants with four men of crew. The composition draws on the sprues of several separate sets by the manufacturer, so in one box you get command, Hispanic and African infantry, Gallic cavalry and elephants. The figures are unpainted.

The real subject

The Carthaginian army of the Punic Wars was not uniform. Alongside the citizen infantry it included Libyans, Hispanics, Gauls and Numidian riders, and each element had its own weapons and its own way of fighting. That very variety is an advantage for collectors and players alike, because one formation looks interesting without any further additions. War elephants belonged to the Carthaginian army from the first campaign on, and their crossing of the Alps became part of common knowledge.

Building and painting tips

Wash the figures, dry them and spray them with a flexible primer. Divide them up by nationality right away and the painting will go faster: white tunics for the Libyans, white with a red border for the Hispanics, varied patterns for the Gauls. Save the elephants and the riders for last as the ornament of the formation. With a large number of pieces it pays to lay the base coats down in bulk and to finish only the faces and shields by hand.
