HäT 8043 Macedonian phalangites is a 1:72 set with forty-eight figures in eight poses; the sarissa spears are made up from wire.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale with forty-eight figures in eight poses. Note one important thing: there are no spears in the package. That is deliberate, because the Macedonian sarissa was so long that in plastic it would always bend; it is therefore made from wire and glued to the figure. In 1:72 scale its length works out at roughly seven centimeters.
The phalanx of Philip and Alexander rested on the sarissa, a spear around five meters long that the soldier held in both hands. The first five ranks lowered them to the horizontal, so that a hedge of points formed in front of the formation which could not be broken from the front. A phalangite carried a smaller shield slung from the shoulder so as to keep both hands free. The formation was unbeatable in a frontal clash but slow and vulnerable from the flank, and that is precisely why Alexander always combined it with cavalry, which decided matters on the wing.
Prepare the sarissas in advance: cut the wire to equal lengths, grind one end to a point and leave the other straight. Glue them on with cyanoacrylate glue only onto finished, painted figures, otherwise they will get in the way of your brush. Paint the shields separately, device and all. Build a phalanx formation on a common base, so that the points in one rank aim the same way; a mismatched angle is the first thing the eye notices.
The figures are supplied unpainted. Spears, paints, glue and bases are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
