HäT 1:72 Assyrian Infantry is a set of forty-four figures of Assyrian infantry with three sets of shields for three different kinds of detachment.

A set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale from the brand HäT. The package contains forty-four figures in eight poses and seventy-six weapons and shields to go with them. It is the shields that decide: there are three different types in the set, so from a single box you can assemble three distinct kinds of foot detachment. Half the poses go to archers and slingers, and in each case one figure is in the act of loading and another at the moment of shooting.
In the first millennium BC the Assyrian army counted as the best organized force of the Near East. The infantry was divided by weapons and protection, with the archers in the field screened by a shield bearer with a tall wicker shield behind which the pair could move. It was precisely the combination of missile fire, spearmen and siege equipment that allowed the Assyrians to take fortified cities.
Wash the figures, dry them and spray them with a flexible primer. Glue the shields and weapons on only once the figure is painted, since in this set they are the main distinguishing feature and they paint better on the sprue. Darken the characteristic curled beards and hair with a glaze, and the detail will then stand out without laborious drawing. Paint the tall wicker shields in ocher with a weak brown glaze, so that the texture of the weave stands out.
The figures are supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
