A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks for spraying the national insignia (the crosses) on a Messerschmitt Bf 109 K model in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit; it is an accessory used while painting a model you have already built. It is made by the Czech brand Omask, which lists this item in its range of masks for markings and codes.
Crosses are usually done with a decal. A decal, however, has a carrier film: seen from the side it shows as a rim around the marking, and on a matte surface silvering easily appears, as air stays under the film and the marking turns gray. On a broken-up surface with rivets and panel lines a decal may also fail to settle perfectly. A sprayed marking is painted straight onto the model: it has no film, no rim and no way to silver. It looks exactly as it does on a real aircraft, because there too the marking was made by spraying through a stencil. And above all: a sprayed marking can be weathered in full, chipped, faded, partly oversprayed with camouflage. A decal cannot manage that as convincingly. That is the whole point of the product: it is a step from a built model to a piece that will stand up at a competition.
Apply it to a clean and degreased part; on a greasy or dusty surface the mask will not hold and the paint will creep under. Spraying goes in layers: first the light color of the marking, then the mask, then the dark surrounding shade (or the other way round according to the scheme). Take the mask off while the paint is fresh; from a fully cured layer it can pull off more than it should. Do not pull the mask over the edge of a part, and count on it being cut for a particular model; it may not fit a kit from another manufacturer or of another size.
The set contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
