This is a figure set, not a model of the aircraft. It contains two standing airmen, that is a pose meant for standing beside a finished machine rather than sitting in the cockpit. That is exactly how figures work best on a model: they give the aircraft a sense of scale that is otherwise hard to read even on a large machine, and they turn a display model into a scene. The set is marked as scene one. The equipment of a carrier airman is a rewarding subject in itself: a g-suit with its hoses, a life vest with a harness and a helmet carried in the hand or under the arm.

The real subject

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was an American carrier-based fighter with a two-man crew and a variable-sweep wing. It served with naval aviation and its task was above all the long-range protection of the carrier group. The crew consisted of a pilot and a weapon systems officer seated behind him.

Usage tips

• Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, because residues remain on the surface after printing.
• Cut the supports off as close to the part as possible and sand the marks away; they have nothing to do with casting.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, because printed resin does not react to cement for plastic.
• Apply primer before painting, otherwise the paint comes off when the figure is handled.
• Place the figures so that they respond to each other, otherwise the scene does not work.

The set is for modelers of carrier aviation who are adding a crew to a finished machine, and for builders of flight deck dioramas. Painting figures in this scale calls for practice and a fine brush.
