A turned metal gun barrel for the German 2 cm KwK 38 automatic cannon in 1:72 scale. The package holds one piece and replaces the barrel from a plastic kit.

The real subject

The KwK 38 is a German automatic cannon of 20 millimeter caliber. Against tanks it was already weak during the war, but it dealt well with lightly armored vehicles and with infantry, and because it fired fast it was fitted into light armored vehicles, among them the Panzer II light tank. In 1:72 scale the barrel comes out as a thin rod on which every inaccuracy shows at once.

Why replace the barrel

A machined barrel is straight, has a constant diameter along its whole length and a drilled muzzle, so no solid material shows from the front. It also does away with cleaning up the marks of manufacture, which on a long thin plastic part always takes something off the shape.

Building tips

• Cut the original barrel off at the root and widen the hole in the shield or the turret with a drill, dry, until the new barrel seats with no force.
• Glue with super glue or two-part adhesive; cement for polystyrene does not hold here.
• Wash and degrease the part before painting and use a primer, or paint will hold badly on the smooth surface.
• Before the glue sets, check the barrel from the front and from above so that it does not point to one side or downward.
