A German elite division in Normandy 1944 to 1945, 1:72 scale. Infantry in camouflage smocks and with antitank weapons for scenes of fighting in the hedgerows.
Responsibility details are not available.
The fighting in the Normandy interior took place in a landscape divided by high banks and hedgerows. A field a few dozen meters across formed a battlefield of its own, the view ended at the nearest bank and engagements broke down into short duels between small groups. The elite divisions deployed in this area were distinguished by camouflage smocks, a higher proportion of submachine guns and assault rifles and the plentiful use of single-shot antitank weapons.
A German infantry squad had its center of gravity in the machine gun, and the rest of the men served, covered and supplied it. The gunner, his assistant with the spare barrel and the carrier of the ammunition boxes moved as a single whole, while the others formed the protection of the flanks. When you are building the set, start from the machine gun pair and only then place the others around it; the opposite procedure leads to the group looking like a random cluster.
Place the figures low. A man lying behind a bank, a second crouching by a trunk and a third running across a gap in the hedge will say more about the nature of that fighting than standing poses. Leave the open space in front of the group, not behind it.
On a figure twenty-five millimeters tall a faithful drawing of a camouflage pattern does not work, only a suggestion of it. Apply two or three muted tones in irregular patches and bring out the edges with dry brushing; the pattern has to be legible from half a meter away, not through a magnifier. Do not forget the footwear and the lower hem of the trousers, which darkened fastest in the clayey Normandy soil and will tie the figures to the ground better than any other detail.
