About product

A German artillery crew in winter equipment, 1:72

A set of unassembled plastic figures in 1:72 scale from the brand MARS Model. It shows a German artillery crew of the Second World War period in winter equipment. According to the name of the product, models of two weapons are part of the set as well: the light 10.5 cm gun of the LG 42/43 type and the 8 cm mortar of the s.G.W. 34 type. The number of figures, the number of poses and the number of pieces of the individual weapons are not stated here.

The real subject

Winter equipment differs from the standard kind so much that figures in it cannot be mistaken for an ordinary set: longer coats, reversible anoraks and helmets covered with cloth change the whole silhouette of a figure. For a modeler that is interesting above all from the painting point of view, because he works with a white or light gray layer over a darker ground. Of the weapons included in the set, the 10.5 cm LG 42/43 is a light gun on the recoilless principle, which thanks to its low weight was portable and could be taken apart, while the 8 cm s.G.W. 34 is a standard medium mortar with the classic arrangement of barrel, bipod and baseplate. The two weapons are very different in construction and they complete each other in one formation.

Cleaning and painting tips

Before building, clear the castings of parting lines and of excess at the edges of the coats, the helmets and the barrels. The weapons have thin parts, the legs of the bipod, the baseplate, the cradle, so go at them with a sharp tool and without pressure. Apply the base coat thinly, so that the folds of cloth are not filled. With winter equipment it proves worthwhile to paint from a darker ground toward a light top layer: let the darker tone stay in the folds and lay the light paint only on the tops. Bring out the metal parts of the weapons with a dark wash and a fine dry brush. If you set the set into a winter scene, it pays to unify the figures and the weapons with the same final matte varnish and to add modeling snow only at the very end.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of winter dioramas in 1:72 scale.
  • Modelers looking for a matching crew for their equipment.
  • Anyone interested in less usual types of artillery armament.
  • Collectors of figure sets in the same scale.

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name of the product states both weapons expressly as part of the set. The number of pieces and the extent of the parts, however, are not stated here, so check them on the packaging.

The number of figures and the number of poses are not stated here. The figure tends to be printed on the packaging of the set.

Do not use pure white as a base. Lay down a light gray or beige-tinted ground, let a darker glaze run into the folds and put pure white only on the tops of the folds. The textile thereby gains depth.

Yes, the scale matches ordinary kits of equipment in 1:72. Small differences in proportion between brands of figures are usual and get lost in the finished scene.
