About product

Hotchkiss H39 with the 37 mm SA38 gun, 1:72, First to Fight

A plastic kit of the French Hotchkiss H39 light tank in 1:72 scale from the Polish manufacturer First to Fight. The boxing captures the later variant armed with the long-barreled 37 mm SA38 gun, which markedly improved penetration over the older short weapon. The kit belongs to a line designed for an easy, quick build, and a historical booklet is included in the box. Glue and paints are not supplied.

The real subject

The Hotchkiss H35 and the H39 derived from it were French light tanks created in the second half of the 1930s mainly for cavalry (fast) units. The hull and the turret were cast, which gave the vehicle its characteristic rounded shapes and decent armor protection for so small a machine. Its weak point was the one-man turret, in which the commander loaded and fired at the same time - in combat that noticeably slowed the rate of fire. While the original vehicles carried a short 37 mm gun, later machines received the longer SA38 with markedly better anti-armor capability. The H39 took part in the fighting of the French campaign of 1940; after the defeat of France the German side took over a large number of captured vehicles and used them for occupation, training and rear-area duties. Some of the surviving machines also appeared after the war in other armies.

Building and painting tips

On vehicles in a small scale it pays to start with the running gear: fit and align the wheels, the rollers and the tracks before you close the hull and glue the fenders on - after that they are hard to reach. The cast armor of the hull and the turret has a coarser texture on the real thing than rolled plate; you can suggest it by lightly stippling a thin layer of filler with a brush, but in 1:72 a very light hint is enough. Start painting with primer, then the base camouflage with an airbrush. For the weathering use a dark wash in the pressed recesses and on the rivets and dry pigments for mud and dust effects - apply the pigment mainly to the running gear, the lower hull and the fenders, and ease off toward the top. At the end, unify the surface with a matte clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of French equipment of 1940 and of early Second World War tanks
  • Modelers who build armor in 1:72 for a display case or dioramas
  • Anyone interested in a quick build without complicated gluing
  • Builders who want to practice washes and pigment weathering on a small vehicle

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The SA18 is the older short 37 mm weapon with a low muzzle velocity and weak penetration. The SA38 has a markedly longer barrel and is considerably more effective against armored targets. This kit represents the version with the SA38.

The model is designed for an easy build, but it is supplied unpainted and neither glue nor paints are included in the package. For a firm, clean result, ordinary cement for plastic is recommended.

Yes. A small French tank is a rewarding subject for scenes from the 1940 campaign and for later scenes with captured equipment.
