About product

IJN Zero, Model 52 (Mitsubishi), 1:72, FineMolds

A plastic kit of the Japanese carrier fighter Mitsubishi A6M Zero in the Model 52 version in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer FineMolds, which has a reputation among modelers as a brand with extremely accurate shapes and fine engraving. The boxing is focused on machines from Mitsubishi production, and that matters: Zeros were built alongside by Nakajima as well, and its machines differed in a number of details and in the shade of the interior. That is exactly why the manufacturer states whose production it is in the name, and the shapes of the parts follow accordingly. The kit contains plastic parts on several sprues and waterslide decals for machines of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service.

The real subject

At the start of the war the Zero was an unsurpassably agile fighter with an enormous range, and the Allies had no answer to it for a long time. The price for that was high: the aircraft had neither armor for the pilot nor self-sealing tanks, so it often caught fire immediately when hit. As soon as faster American fighters appeared, this weakness became fatal. Model 52 (A6M5) was an attempt at an answer: it received a shortened wing with rounded tips, which raised the permitted speed in a dive, and during production also individual ejector exhaust stacks, which added a few kilometers per hour. It was the most numerously built version of the Zero and it fought until the end of the war.

Building and painting tips

It is classic injection-molded plastic, glued with a thin cement for polystyrene that draws into the joint by capillary action. In 1:72 scale the parts are small, so a sharp knife, a fine file and tweezers pay off. Paint the interior and the engine before you close the fuselage. We recommend a primer, spraying with an airbrush and overcoating the area with gloss varnish before the decals, as the decal then beds down without silvering and the surface is finally evened out with a matte varnish. The Zero takes a subtle picking out of the engraved lines and restrained wear around the wing root, where pilots climbed in.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in the Japanese air services of the Second World War
  • Builders in 1:72 who want an accurate kit that goes together well
  • The slightly advanced: the build is straightforward, but the parts are small
  • Collectors who want a Zero specifically from Mitsubishi production

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The main recognition feature is the shortened wing with rounded tips, which allowed a higher speed in a dive. During production, individual ejector exhaust stacks were also added in place of a common collector pipe.

Zeros were built by Nakajima as well as by Mitsubishi and the machines of the two makers differed in details and in the shade of the interior. The manufacturer therefore specifies in the name whose production the kit captures, and the parts are shaped and the decals chosen accordingly.

The build is logical and has no serious traps, but 1:72 scale means small parts and fine decals. We recommend it rather to slightly advanced modelers who already have experience with an airbrush or at least with careful brushwork.

No. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and varnishes have to be bought separately.
