The crew of Imperial field guns of the middle of the seventeenth century. Paid craftsmen at the barrel, in varied civilian dress, with a powder horn and a broad hanger.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the Imperial armies of the Thirty Years' War, the man at the gun was not altogether a soldier. A master gunner concluded a contract of his own, swore an oath to his guild and was paid according to the work he did, sometimes even according to the number of rounds fired. That special position is matched by the way he looked: nobody prescribed what he was to put on.
Variety is historically correct here. The figures have coats of various cuts and colors, baggy breeches, high boots with the tops turned down and a hat with plumes that would look showy in a rank of infantry. The badge of the trade was not a piece of clothing but the tool in the hand and the horn of fine priming powder hung on a cord over the shoulder.
The personal weapon had a practical reason. A broad short hanger with a wavy guard was carried because it could be used to cut through traces, to hew a quoin for under the carriage and to defend oneself if the cavalry broke through the covering force. The crew as a rule had no musket; firearm protection was provided for them by a detachment of musketeers attached to the battery.
The light regimental piece changed the work at the barrel. On the Nordic pattern, small barrels were introduced into the Imperial regiments which a pair of horses could pull and which the crew itself could move in the field with reins and levers. Such a weapon took a fixed round with the ball attached, so the rate of fire rose. The set is made up of castings in the reduction of 1:72 suited to scenes from the fighting in central Europe. On a small figure it comes out well if the leather of the boots is left darker than the belt and the plumes on the hat are given a brighter tone than the coat.
