An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese fighter Kawasaki Ki-61-I Otsu Hien in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer RS Models. It is a short-run kit meant to be glued and sprayed; the model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. For the exact contents of the package, the number of schemes and any accessories, follow the enclosed instructions.
The Ki-61 Hien, which the Allies knew by the code name Tony, was the only Japanese production fighter powered by a liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine; its slender nose therefore led the Allies to the mistaken belief that it was a type related to the German Messerschmitt. The Ki-61-I Otsu variant carried 12.7 mm machine gun armament, with machine guns in the fuselage as well as in the wings – unlike the later Hei version, which received 20 mm cannon in the wings. The Otsu was among the most widespread sub-versions and was fielded from 1943.
Short-run kits call for more craft than ordinary ones – clean up the molding edges, adjust the mating surfaces and set the canopy glazing carefully. Finish the interior first and only then glue the fuselage. Spray the base over a primer and apply the paints with an airbrush in thin coats. You can bring out the panel lines and the worn metal on the leading edges with a fine wash and a dry brush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
