The MD-3 belongs among the tow tractors that serve with the US Air Force and the US Navy to move aircraft around on the ground. The machine is deliberately low and flat, so as to pass even under the wing of a standing aircraft, and at the same time it has weight enough to get a machine weighing several tons moving. Its name carries the word Mule. On the apron and in a hangar such tractors are constantly on the move and belong to a scene as naturally as the aircraft themselves.

It is an accessory to aircraft models and to dioramas: in itself it is a small machine, but beside a standing aircraft it gives the scene scale and action, because it shows the viewer at once how large that aircraft really is. The range of parts and the assembly procedure are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The tractor is small against an aircraft, and so every unevenness of the surface shows on it. Wash and degrease the parts before painting and apply the paint in thin coats, so that it does not flood the fine edges. Choose the color scheme from a particular photograph, because it differs between users and periods. Signs of service, that is wear on the edges, dust on the chassis and oil stains, turn the model into a working machine; without them a scene comes across as sterile.
