The lettering that outlines a machine

A real combat aircraft is covered with hundreds of small markings: warnings about walking into the intake, lifting points, controls for the emergency landing gear, labels on fuel fillers. On a fast high-altitude machine they are joined by data on limits that the ground crew works with every day. On a model it is exactly this fine lettering that makes the difference between a smooth shape and a machine that looks used. The individual stencils cannot be read with the naked eye in a small scale, but the eye takes them in as surface texture.

What a standalone sheet is for

The sheet carries technical stencils only, no tactical numbers and no national insignia. It therefore suits cases where the builder has obtained the markings elsewhere - from another sheet, from home printing or from masks. The second common situation is building two models of the same type at once, when the stencils from one sheet do not stretch to both. Anyone who needs numbers and stencils together instead reaches for sheets with the markings of specific machines, where the fine lettering is already included.

Working with small print

The smallest elements here measure tenths of a millimeter and behave differently from large insignia. Cut them out with a margin of paper, dip them in for only a moment and transfer them onto a damp surface so that they can be fine-tuned with the tip of a brush. Use a decal softener sparingly, otherwise a small stencil will ripple and dissolve. Once dry, unify the surface with a clear coat that reliably hides the edges of the film. Dampen the tip of your tweezers beforehand, so that the scrap does not cling to the metal instead of the model.
