About product

Reskit 1:72 Mk-38 depth bombs (650 lb) (4 pcs)

The set from Reskit contains four aircraft depth bombs Mk-38 weighing 650 pounds, made by 3D printing in resin with sharp surface detail. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory for external stores in 1:72 scale. The parts are unpainted and come on print supports.

The real subject

The Mk-38 belongs to the heavier category of American aircraft depth bombs, 650 pounds. Against the lighter 350 pound ordnance it offered a stronger charge and a greater effective radius against a submarine, in exchange for a higher weight that mainly the larger naval machines could carry. It was carried by the four-engine PB4Y Liberator, the PBY Catalina flying boat, the carrier-based TBF/TBM Avenger, the SBD Dauntless dive bomber and the PV-1 Ventura patrol aircraft, for instance. A depth bomb was released from low altitude and exploded at a set depth, where the pressure wave destroyed the submarine.

How to work with the resin parts

  • Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry; that removes the print resin residue.
  • Cut the print supports off with a scalpel or a fine saw, and do not snap them off.
  • Sand the support marks back finely with respiratory protection, ideally damp, as resin dust must not be breathed in.
  • Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); cement for plastic will not bond resin.
  • Apply a primer before painting, then the color and a fine wash to bring out the shapes and the joints.

Who the set is for

For advanced modelers of American naval patrol, carrier and anti-submarine aircraft in 1:72 scale who want faithful, sharply detailed armament instead of the softer plastic from the kit. It will also serve well in a diorama, as ordnance ready to be loaded, for instance.

The set is supplied as a resin accessory, unpainted and without paints and glue. It is not an airplane model on its own. Ventilate and protect your airways and eyes when cutting and sanding resin. Small parts do not belong in the hands of small children.

FAQ

The Mk-38 is the heavier depth bomb of the 650 pound category, while the Mk-XVII belongs to the lighter 350 pound category. The heavier type was carried mainly by the larger naval machines. Both Reskit sets contain four pieces in 1:72 scale and can be combined to suit a particular combat configuration.

American naval patrol, carrier and anti-submarine aircraft in 1:72 scale, typically the PB4Y Liberator, the PBY Catalina, the TBF/TBM Avenger, the SBD Dauntless or the PV-1 Ventura. Before buying, check that the racks of your kit match.

No. The parts are unpainted and come without glue. Resin calls for cyanoacrylate glue, and washing and priming the parts before painting is recommended.
