About product

HäT 1:72 Natal Native Horse

A set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale from the brand HäT. The package contains eighteen figures in six poses and twelve horses in two poses. Nine of the figures are on foot in two poses, the rest belong in the saddle. The plastic is unpainted and the rider has to be seated on the horse. The set belongs to the Zulu branch of the line and complements the British as well as the Zulu units from the same maker.

The real subject

The Natal Native Horse were mounted units made up of African volunteers in British service during the war with the Zulus in 1879. They served as reconnaissance and advance guard, and their knowledge of the ground was irreplaceable for the British columns. Best known is their part in the retreat from Isandlwana, where the mounted native units covered the withdrawal of the survivors.

Building and painting tips

Wash the plastic, dry it and spray it with a flexible primer. The clothing of these units was mixed, part of the equipment coming from British supply and part of it their own, so you can allow yourself variety and suggest uniformity only with a colored band or a scarf. Paint the horses in muted tones. Place the figures on foot and the mounted ones together, and the formation then matches the way these units really operated.

Who the set is for

  • for collectors of the colonial wars in Africa
  • for players of wargames from the war with the Zulus
  • for builders of dioramas from 1879
  • for completing the British and Zulu sets of the same range

The figures are supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
